Geneseo Runs Away From Field Hockey In Second Half

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher field hockey team fell to SUNY Geneseo 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals dropped to 3-5 overall (0-1 Empire 8 Conference), while the Knights improved to 5-3 (2-0 Empire 8).

The Cardinals' defense kept the match tight in the first half and into the third quarter. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Parrinello made seven saves in the first 30 minutes of action, with four coming in the second quarter.

The strain imposed by Knights' offense would eventually be too much to overcome, though, as Geneseo scored all five of their goals in the second half, four of which occurred in the fourth quarter.

How It Happened

Geneseo applied the majority of the pressure in the opening quarter, putting all three of its shots on goal, but Fisher's defense held tight. Parrinello denied all three attempts to keep the game at zero after one. Fisher found one shot and one penalty corner in the period.

The Knights elevated their offensive chances in the second quarter, out-shooting Fisher 7–0 while logging five penalty corners. The Cardinals remained steady on the defensive side, as Parrinello made four additional saves to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Fisher's defense again absorbed a heavy load, as Parrinello added five saves to her afternoon. The Knights finally broke through for the game's first goal as Halle Senfield whacked a slow roller that deflected off Parrinello to take a 1–0 lead into the fourth quarter.

Geneseo pulled away in the fourth quarter, scoring four times on seven shots to flip a one-goal game into a 5–0 final. Fisher managed one shot and one penalty corner in the period, but was unable to find a shot on goal.

Game Notes

  • Parrinello set a season high with 14 saves. Her previous season high was 11 saves against William Smith on Sept. 1. She had seven saves in the first half alone and 12 through three quarters.

  • A pair of midfielders, Mary Kate McPhee and Holly Stuart, accounted for Fisher's only two shots. McPhee entered the game as Fisher's season leader with 37 shots and 24 shots on goal, while Stuart had five shots entering the match.
