Women's Soccer Improves To 3-0 For The First Time In 20 Years With Win Over RIT

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women's soccer team improved to 3-0 for the first time in 20 years with a 1-0 victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology (1-1-1) on Wednesday evening at Growney Stadium.

Freshman forward Molly Simmons scored the game's lone goal in the 33rd minute, and the Cardinals played strong defense throughout to secure just their fourth win over RIT since 2000. Sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Ayers made three saves and earned credit for her second shutout of the season.

The Cardinals finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots with an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.

How It Happened

The Cardinals capitalized on a fortunate bounce for their goal at 33:44. A pass from junior forward Emily Woolingham, which appeared to be intended for sophomore defender Brooklyn Olschewske on the opposite side of the field, deflected off an RIT defender and into the air toward Simmons, who moved a few steps to her right before lofting a shot over Tigers goalkeeper Ashton Anderson.

RIT did not register a shot on goal in the first half but had three chances turned away in the second by Ayers.

Game Notes

  • The Cardinals improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2006, when they opened the season with wins over Staten Island, Wisconsin-Platteville and SUNY Oswego.

  • The Cardinals have outscored their first three opponents 11-2.

  • Ayers notched her seventh collegiate shutout and her second in a row.

  • Simmons has tallied a point in every game this season and has four total on the year.
