PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Five St. John Fisher University student-athletes have earned weekly honors from the Empire 8, the conference office announced on Monday.
Hunter Fales (Freshman, Baseball) – Empire 8 Rookie of the Week
Fales hit .545 (6-for-11) with two doubles, six RBI and three runs scored. He drove in three runs in a win over SUNY Poly on Wednesday and followed that up with a double and two more RBI in a win over Houghton on Saturday. It is his second E8 weekly honor of the season.
Tyler Hernandez (Junior, Men's Tennis) – Empire 8 Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Hernandez was named Most Valuable Player of the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament, which the Cardinals won for the first time with victories over Norwich and Alfred over the weekend to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Hernandez went 2-0 in the tournament in first singles, recording wins over Jaxon Redmond of Norwich in the semifinal round and Ricardo Alvarez of Alfred in the championship.
Sean Brown (Senior, Men's Tennis) and Finn Whitaker (Freshman, Men's Tennis) – Empire 8 Doubles Team of the Week
Brown and Whitaker picked up decisive wins at second doubles to help lead St. John Fisher to its first Empire 8 Men's Tennis Championship over the weekend. On Friday, the duo rolled to a 6-0 win against Stephen Hartigan and Juan Gonzalez Torres of Norwich in an eventual 4-0 win. They took the second doubles spot in the E8 title dual match against Andre Lopez Jimenez and Breece Erickson of Alfred by a score of 6-3 to give Fisher the crucial doubles point.
Abigail Dorunda (Sophomore, Women's Track & Field) – Empire 8 Track Athlete of the Week
Dorunda had an outstanding weekend in the Empire 8 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning Track Athlete of the Meet honors. She won the 100-meter dash with a program record time of 12.25 seconds and helped the Cardinals' 4x100 team, which also included
Makenna Manson,
Ella Radley and
Emily Heiner, place first at 48.38 seconds. Additionally, she finished third in the 200-meter run (25.44 seconds), placed sixth in the 400-meter run (59.45 seconds) and was part of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed second (4:04.00).
