PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 11 St. John Fisher men's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to six games on Saturday with a 22-7 Senior Day victory over SUNY Polytechnic at Growney Stadium.
Fisher improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in Empire 8 Conference play, while Poly dropped to 5-7 and 1-4, respectively. Including regular-season and playoffs, the Cardinals have won 51 consecutive games against Empire 8 teams since the end of the 2019 season.
The Cardinals had 17 players tally points in the contest, with 10 of them recording two or more. Senior midfielder Nick Hauman and junior attackman Garrett Sutton led the way with four points apiece. Hauman had a goal and three assists, while Sutton scored three times and had one helper.
Senior midfielder Brett Seaman (one goal, two assists) and sophomore attacker Graham Kesselring (two goals, one assist) had three points apiece. Junior midfielder Sean Donaldson (one goal, one assist), junior attackman Scott Bovard (two goals), sophomore attackman Logan Welch (two goals), freshman faceoff specialist Jonah Vormwald (one goal, one assist) and freshmen midfielders Hayden Lauer (two goals) and Darren Vogt (two goals) each tallied two points.
The Cardinals dominated at the face-off X, winning 32 of the game's 33 draws. Vormwald went a perfect 18-for-18, and senior Bryce Riffel finished 14-for-15.
All four of Fisher's goalkeepers logged action, with senior Tyler Manning making a team-high six saves. Freshman Jackson Frame and sophomore Kieran Phillips made one save apiece.
The Cardinals honored their nine seniors – Hauman, Seaman, Riffel, Manning, Lane Edinger, Matt Slowinski, Eric Stoesser, Terrence Cleary and Nick Augeri – before the game.
How It Happened
Following somewhat of a slow start by their standards, the Cardinals kicked things into gear in the middle to late stages of the first quarter, sparking a run of five consecutive goals to take an 8-2 lead. Bovard scored both of his goals in the frame, while Sutton, Vormwald, Donaldson, Seaman, Lauer and Hauman found the back of the net once.
The Cardinals' stretch of unanswered tallies reached 13 in the second quarter as they put eight more on the board to extend their lead to 16-2. Welch and Sutton each scored twice in the quarter, and four others netted one apiece, including Edinger, Lauer, sophomore attacker Luke James and freshman attacker Grady Swidersky.
Poly scored three straight goals in the third quarter before the Cardinals' offense caught fire again. Kesselring, Vogt and sophomore midfielders Braden Seymour and Sam Hambsch scored before the quarter ended to make the score 20-5.
Vogt and Kesselring scored their second goals of the day in the fourth quarter.
