DAVENPORT, FL. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team earned a 6-3 victory over the University of Dubuque on Friday in RussMatt baseball. With the win, the Cardinals continued to build momentum early in the season, improving to 7-2.
Fisher totaled six runs on 10 hits in the contest. Jordan Perry led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored while also stealing a base. Jack Griffin added a strong performance at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Austin Droge also recorded three hits and drove in a run, while Noah Pohrte delivered a key two-RBI single in the second inning. Scott Sleurs chipped in with a double and a run scored as the Cardinals produced timely offense throughout the game.
On the mound, Justin Christensen started the game on the mound, striking out eight over four innings while allowing two runs on two hits. Nathan Benjamin provided five strong innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four to secure and earn the victory.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals broke through in the second. Brendan Bucello walked before Sleurs doubled. Pohrte followed with a two-RBI single to give Fisher a 2-0 lead.
Dubuque answered in the third when Alex Esser delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2.
The Spartans briefly took the lead in the fifth with an RBI single from Will Sullivan, making it 3-2.
Fisher responded in the seventh. With two outs, Cubello drew a walk before Perry launched a two-run home run to right field, putting the Cardinals back in front 4-3.
The Cardinals added insurance in the ninth inning. Perry worked a walk and moved into scoring position before Griffin ripped an RBI double to left field. Droge followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-3.
Benjamin closed the door in the ninth, retiring the final two hitters to secure the win.
Game Notes
Perry recorded his second home run of the season and finished with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Griffin and Droge each tallied three-hit performances.
Christensen struck out eight in four innings.
Fisher pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts while allowing just six hits and two walks in the victory
