PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Junior forward Emily Woolingham broke a tie with her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 52nd minute and St. John Fisher hung on the rest of the way for a 2-1 victory over Utica on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium.
Winners of seven consecutive matches, the Cardinals improved to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in Empire 8 Conference play. Utica fell to 4-4-4 and 1-2-3, respectively.
Both teams generated plenty of offensive chances throughout, finishing the contest with 18 shots apiece. Fisher held a slight advantage (10-8) in shots on goal.
St. John Fisher sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Ayers played all 90 minutes and made seven saves, two shy of her season high.
How It Happened
St. John Fisher got on the board first with some help from Utica at the 25:01 mark. Sophomore defender Morgan Tara sent a long, arching pass in the direction of senior midfielder Francesca Logrippo, and a Utica defender headed the ball past goalkeeper Emily Duro.
Utica's Cora Kraft scored unassisted in the 35th minute to tie the game, but the Cardinals regained the lead less than 20 minutes of game time later. Junior defender Abby Dorunda maneuvered past a defender before firing a pass downfield to Woolingham, who headed the ball into the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winning tally.
Ayers recorded six of her saves in the second half, with four of them coming in the final five minutes of the match.
