Field Hockey Falls Short to No. 24 U of R 2-0

PITTSFORD, N.Y – The St. John Fisher field hockey team dropped a tightly contested 2-0 match against No. 24 University of Rochester on Wednesday evening at Growney Stadium.

The Cardinals, who'd won three consecutive contests, dropped to 3-3, while the Yellowjackets moved to 9-1 with their fourth straight victory. The contest marked Fisher's final non-league game of the season.

How it Happened

  • The Cardinals generated a handful of scoring chances in the opening period, putting four shots on goal. Rochester goalkeeper Kara Houston made a pair of outstanding saves on shots in quick succession by Fisher senior midfielder Lily Humphrey and senior attacker Avery McLaughlin

  • The contest remained scoreless until Kristina Federova found the back of the net to put the Yellowjackets ahead 1-0 with just more than four minutes to play in the first half.

  • The Cardinals had two cracks at tying the game in the third quarter, but Houston turned away a pair of quality shots by McLaughlin to preserve the one-goal lead for the U of R. The Yellowjackets put the game out of reach with just under four minutes remaining when Kyla Byer received a pass from Sophia Cuneo on a penalty corner and ripped a shot past Fisher goalkeeper Morgan Parrinello

Game Notes

  • Parrinello made four saves, including three in the third quarter alone to keep Fisher's deficit at one goal.

  • Rochester finished with a slight 13-8 edge in total shots, but the teams finished even with six attempts on goal.
