Field Hockey Dominates Elmira 7-0 On Senior Day

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Despite being down to its emergency goalkeeper in sophomore midfielder Holly Stuart, the St. John Fisher field hockey team blanked Elmira College 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium.

The Cardinals (4-3, 2-0 Empire 8), winners of four of their last five games, set a season high with their seven goals. Elmira (1-6, 0-3 Empire 8) suffered its third straight loss.

Fisher honored its five seniors – Haley Acevedo, Emma Muchow, Lily Humphrey, Katie Schirrmacher and Morgan Gregory – before the game. Muchow (goal) and Schirrmacher (assist) recorded points in the contest.

How it Happened

  • Junior Mary Kate McPhee and sophomroes Avery McLaughlin, Alison Taplin and Sam Current each scored as the Cardinals jumped on the Soaring Eagles with four first-quarter tallies. McPhee assisted the Taplin and McLaughlin goals, while Schirrmacher earned credit for the assist on Current's goal.

  • McPhee dished out her third assist of the half in the second quarter on Muchow's goal, which gave the Cardinals a 5-0 cushion.

  • McLaughlin scored her second goal of the game in the third quarter, deflecting Current's shot past Elmira goalkeeper Angelina Caban at the 40:12 mark. She tallied an assist in the fourth quarter on freshman Teresa Smith's second goal of the season.

  • Stuart made four saves in the shutout victory, the Cardinals' third of the season. Elmira attempted eight shots overall.

Game Notes

  • With a pair of goals and an assist, McLaughlin amassed a career-high five points.

  • McPhee matched her career high with five points on a goal and three assists.

  • Taplin and Muchow recorded their first collegiate goals.

  • Current scored her fifth goal and pushed her point total to 11, both the top marks on the team.

  • The Cardinals now hold a 13-1 record against the Soaring Eagles.
