Field Hockey Opens 2025 with 3-2 Overtime Loss to William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. – Freshman Teresa Smith scored her first two career goals, but the St. John Fisher field hockey team fell short 3-2 in overtime to William Smith in its season opener on Friday.

How It Happened

  •  The Cardinals started the game strong, scoring their first goal of the season when Smith buried a feed from junior Mary Kate McPhee about five minutes in. Less than a minute later, McPhee found Smith again as the Cardinals went ahead 2-0.

  • William Smith countered in the second quarter with Caroline Kogut accounting for both goals, the first of which came on a penalty corner.

  • The score stayed tied at two until William Smith's Abby Jones found the back of the net less than a minute into overtime, securing the 3-2 victory for the Herons.

Game Notes

  • McPhee, Fisher's top returning offensive player from last year, set a career high with her two assists. It was her 13th collegiate game with two or more points.

  • In her first collegiate debut, freshman goalkeeper Teagan Rosencranse made eight saves while facing 11 shots.
