GENEVA, N.Y. – Freshman Teresa Smith scored her first two career goals, but the St. John Fisher field hockey team fell short 3-2 in overtime to William Smith in its season opener on Friday.

The Cardinals started the game strong, scoring their first goal of the season when Smith buried a feed from junior Mary Kate McPhee about five minutes in. Less than a minute later, McPhee found Smith again as the Cardinals went ahead 2-0.

William Smith countered in the second quarter with Caroline Kogut accounting for both goals, the first of which came on a penalty corner.

The score stayed tied at two until William Smith's Abby Jones found the back of the net less than a minute into overtime, securing the 3-2 victory for the Herons.

McPhee, Fisher's top returning offensive player from last year, set a career high with her two assists. It was her 13th collegiate game with two or more points.

In her first collegiate debut, freshman goalkeeper Teagan Rosencranse made eight saves while facing 11 shots.
