PENFIELD, N.Y. – Playing on one of his home courses, St. John Fisher's Nick Tellone had one of the top performances of the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday at the Midvale Country Club. St. John Fisher, in collaboration with the Rochester Sports Commission, is hosting the championship this week for the second time in the last 10 years.

First-round action took place simultaneously at Midvale and the Cobblestone Creek Country Club in Victor on Tuesday. Play resumes at 8 a.m. Wednesday with shotgun starts at both courses due to the expected rainy conditions in the Rochester area.

Tellone, one of just nine players under par thus far, stands in a tie for fifth place with Juney Bai (Illinois Wesleyan) and Ryan Choi (Carleton) after carding a 70 (-2) on Tuesday. The graduate senior had four birdies during his opening round.

Senior RJ Juodaitis and a trio of freshmen, Nick Years, Robert Fischer and Colin Patterson, are also competing in the championship for the Cardinals. Juodaitis shot a 76 on Tuesday and is tied for 75th place.

The Cardinals finished the first day tied for 25th place as a team at +21 (309 strokes). Illinois Wesleyan holds first place (290), while John Carroll (294), Carleton (294) and Aurora (295) aren't far behind.

The tournament field includes 43 teams of five players and 10 individual qualifiers. It will be cut down to the top 18 teams and the top six individuals not on one of those teams after Wednesday's round. Team and individual champions will be determined after 72 holes or the final completed round.

Midvale will host the final two rounds on its own on Thursday and Friday.
