PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team used a strong third quarter to push past Geneseo 14-7 in its toughest Empire 8 Conference test so far this season on Wednesday evening at Growney Stadium.
The Cardinals, ranked No. 6 in the Division III Power Index released by the NCAA earlier this week, improved to 11-0 overall (4-0 Empire 8) with the victory. Geneseo, 6-6 overall (3-1 E8), took its first conference loss of the season.
The Cardinals have now won 16 consecutive regular-season games since a one-goal loss to Geneseo last April and 58 consecutive conference games (regular season and postseason) since 2018.
How It Happened
-
The Cardinals couldn't pull away from a pesky Knights team and even found themselves trailing for the first time all season in a conference game in the first half.
-
After first-quarter tallies by junior Kaley Griffin and seniors Hanna Kumpf and Emma Biel gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead, Geneseo scored three unanswered goals to go ahead 4-3.
-
The Cardinals and Knights traded goals at the end of the first half. Fisher tied the score with just more than two minutes remaining when senior midfielder Sydney Carpenter scored on a feed from senior attacker Mary Fiorentino. Less than a minute later, Geneseo took the lead again on a goal by Olivia Luchetti.
-
Biel tied the game with 18 seconds left before halftime, scoring her second goal of the contest on a free-position shot.
-
The Cardinals left the Knights behind with a dominant third quarter in which they scored five times to take a 10-5 lead. Kumpf's goal at the 8:30 mark broke a 5-5 tie, and not long after that, Carpenter extended the Cardinals' lead to 8-5 with two goals in less than a minute. Sophomore attacker Chelsea Lopata scored Fisher's fifth goal of the quarter on an assist from Fiorentino with about three minutes remaining.
-
Carpenter scored her fourth goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to extend Fisher's lead to 11-5. Lopata, Griffin and junior attacker Dharma Makarowsky also scored for the Cardinals to finish off the victory in the final period.
