Biel Leads Women's Lacrosse To 16-7 Win Over Nazareth

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Emma Biel scored five goals to lead the St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over crosstown rival Nazareth on Saturday afternoon at NLPA Field. 

The Cardinals remained unbeaten (14-0 overall, 7-0 Empire 8) with the victory, their 13th in a row over the Golden Flyers. Nazareth fell to 9-6 overall (5-2 Empire 8) with the loss. 

The Cardinals have now won 19 consecutive regular-season games since the middle of last season and 61 in a row against Empire 8 teams (counting regular season and postseason contests). 

How It Happened 

  • The Cardinals, who led by one (2-1) after the first 15 minutes of play, began running away with the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Golden Flyers 7-2 en route to a 9-3 halftime lead. Junior midfielder Kaley Griffin scored twice in the quarter. 

  • Biel scored twice in the third quarter as the Cardinals pushed their lead out to as many as eight goals. Senior attacker Mary Fiortentino, who found the back of the net twice in the first half, scored her third goal of the contest in the quarter. Fellow senior attacker Hanna Kumpf netted her second goal. 

  • The Cardinals scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter after Nazareth ended the third on a 2-0 run that made it 13-7. Biel scored her fifth of the game, and junior attacker Dharma Makarowsky found the back of the net twice. 

Game Notes

  • Biel recorded her second five-goal game of the season (the first came against St. Lawrence on Feb. 26). She has scored multiple goals in all but four games this season. 

  • Fiorentino (three goals, one assist) tallied four points, while sophomore Chelsea Lopata scored once and dished out a pair of assists for three points. Griffin (two goals, one assist) also finished with three points. 

  • Senior attacker Farrah Zalla scored one goal, her 18th of the season, to reach 100 points for her career. 

  • Junior defender Maddie Lowney caused a season-high seven turnovers, picked up five ground balls and controlled two draws. 

  • Kumpf and junior Kayla Schatz each scooped up a career-high five ground balls. 

  • Kumpf also won a career-high seven draw controls. 

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Kaylee Gadol made seven saves and earned her 12th victory of the season in net.
