Softball Sweeps Brockport Behind Timely Hitting, Strong Pitching

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Behind strong pitching, clean defense and timely hitting, the St. John Fisher softball team (20-11, 12-2 Empire 8 Conference) swept SUNY Brockport (10-16, 2-10 Empire 8 Conference) in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the SJF Softball Complex.

Game 1: St. John Fisher 4, Brockport 0

Senior pitcher Ainsley Evanetski allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out 12 batters to lead the Cardinals to a 4-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader. She improved her record to 8-6 and earned her fourth shutout win of the season.

The Cardinals' offense had to scrap and claw for their four runs, as Brockport pitcher Fiona Gibiser limited a lineup of heavy hitters to minimal loud contact. Sophomore Emily McManus scored on Amalia DeMartino's ground out to second base in the second inning, while senior Maddie Donlin plated fellow senior Cassidy Evanetski on a ground out to second in the third.

Senior catcher Mari Spitz drove in sophomore Taylor Shackleton and advanced McManus to third with a long single to right center in the sixth inning. McManus scored when the next batter, Amalia DeMartino, hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Senior Katie Mannis led the Cardinals with a pair of hits in the game. DeMartino led Fisher with two RBI.

Game 2: St. John Fisher 2, Brockport 1

The Cardinals rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to complete the doubleheader sweep in a game that featured just nine hits between the teams, five for Fisher and four for Brockport.

With two outs and Brockport clinging to a 1-0 lead, Shackleton doubled down the right field line to score junior Madi Rose all the way from first base. McManus, the next batter, broke the tie with a line-drive screamer through the left side.

Senior pitcher Cassidy Ormond, who struck out five batters in the ballgame, had to work her way out of trouble in the seventh. After Grace Talbut doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, Ormond struck out Jackie DuTot and got Scout Preston to ground out to Shackleton at first to secure the victory.

Ormond improved to 10-2 in her starts. The one run she allowed, which Brockport pushed across with two outs in the fourth inning, was not earned.
