GENESEO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher softball team (21-12, 13-3 Empire 8) split its Saturday doubleheader against SUNY Geneseo (20-8, 10-4 Empire 8).
Game 1: St. John Fisher 10, Geneseo 1 (5 innings)
The Cardinals jumped on the Knights in the first inning with five runs on five hits and a Geneseo error. Senior Katie Mannis had the big blow in the inning, ripping a two-out, bases-loaded triple to left center field that gave the Cardinals a 5-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, junior Madi Rose and sophomore Taylor Shackleton each had run-scoring singles to extend Fisher's lead to 7-1. Rose, who matched her career high with three hits in four at-bats, had another RBI single in the fifth inning as Fisher added three runs to secure the mercy rule victory.
Senior Ainsley Evanetski earned her ninth pitching victory of the season. She allowed six hits, struck out two batters and walked one while pitching all five innings.
Game 2: Geneseo 2, St. John Fisher 1
Geneseo pitcher Gabriella Petroski allowed four hits, issued three walks and struck out five batters in a complete-game shutout of the Cardinals in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Knights scored both of their runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning, with the first coming on Gabriella Smith's single through the left side. The second run came across when Lauren Bieniek reached on a fielder's choice.
St. John Fisher's Cassidy Ormond allowed just five hits, walked two batters and struck out seven over six innings.
