Baseball Beats SUNY Poly to Complete Season Sweep

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher baseball team completed the season sweep (3-0) of SUNY Poly with a 12-1 victory in seven innings on Monday afternoon at Dugan Yard. 

The Cardinals improved to 14-13 overall and 9-4 in the Empire 8 Conference with the victory. SUNY Poly lost its sixth consecutive game as it dropped to 9-16 overall and 5-9 in the conference.

After a scoreless top half of the first inning, the Cardinals scored three runs in their first turn at the plate. A single from Brendan Bucello and back-to-back doubles from Jack Griffin and Jordan Perry all drove in runs.

After singles from Jackson Frey and Ryan Vanderlip, Mario Cubello singled to center field to drive in another run and extend the lead to 4-0 in the second inning.

Ryan Fitzpatrick started the game on the mound for the Cardinals and threw five scoreless frames before giving up his lone run of the outing. Dylan Becker was called upon with two outs in the sixth and stranded two Poly runners on base with an inning-ending strikeout. 

With their lead still at 4-1 entering the frame, the Cardinals pulled away with a five-run bottom of the sixth. A Bucello double scored two runs, and a three-run homer by Griffin blew the game open, pushing Fisher's lead to 9-1. 

Jackson Frey ended the game early with a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. 

Game Notes

  • Fitzpatrick threw 5.2 innings of one-run ball, tallying five strikeouts and allowing only three hits.

  • Michael Bowler threw a 1-2-3 inning of relief in the seventh and tallied one strikeout. 

  • Ryan Vanderlip, Frey, Bucello, Griffin and Perry all tallied two hits.
