No. 18 Women's Lacrosse Makes Program History In 22-3 Win Over Sage

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 18 St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team made program history with a 22-3 thrashing of Russell Sage in its Empire 8 Conference opener on Saturday at Growney Stadium.

With the victory, Fisher improved to 8-0 overall (1-0 E8), which marks the best start to a season in program history. The Cardinals started 7-0 in 2016 and 5-0 in 2021, the year they went 18-2 and reached the NCAA Division III Semifinals.

The Cardinals have won 13 straight regular-season games dating back to last season and 55 straight games (regular season and postseason) against Empire 8 teams since 2018.

How It Happened

  • Perhaps an understatement, the Cardinals scored early and often, lighting up the scoreboard with 11 goals in the first quarter. Junior midfielder Kaley Griffin and senior midfielder Hanna Kumpf each scored three goals in the opening period; senior midfielder Sydney Carpenter scored twice and dished out three assists.

  • The Cardinals scored five more times in the second quarter and went into halftime leading 16-0. Griffin scored her fourth goal of the game in the quarter.

  • Freshman midfielder Maddy Obstarczyk and junior attacker Alivia Nieman pushed Fisher's string of unanswered goals to 18 early in the third quarter. Sage finally found the back of the net midway through the quarter.

  • The Cardinals tacked on three more goals in the fourth quarter to tie their season high (22). They also scored 22 against Washington College earlier this month.

Game Notes

  • The Cardinals had 13 different goal-scorers in the contest. Five players tallied multiple goals.

  • Griffin led the Cardinals with a season-high four goals. Kumpf and sophomore attacker Chelsea Lopata had three goals, while Carpenter and Nieman had two.

  • Carpenter, who had a season-high five assists, finished with seven points. She's now 13 assists shy of the program record.

  • With her two tallies against Sage, Carpenter passed Jordan Johnson four fourth on the program's all-time goals list.

  • With her seven-point performance, Carpenter moved up to third place on the program's all-time points list (269). She's 11 shy of passing Johnson for second and 36 away from passing Taylor Hughes for first.

  • Carpenter has tallied five or more points in six of the Cardinals' eight games this season.

  • Carpenter has scored at least one goal in 20 consecutive games dating back to the middle of last season.

  • Carpenter has tallied multiple points in 19 of her last 20 games dating back to last season.

  • Carpenter also led the Cardinals in draw controls (6), ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (4). She's now fifth in Fisher history in caused turnovers (85) and 10th in ground balls (157).

  • With her three goals, Kumpf surpassed 100 for her career (103). She's scored multiple times in all but one of Fisher's eight contests this season.

  • Freshman Chloe Scanlan, Charlotte Walter and Maddy Obstarczyk scored their first collegiate goals. Seniors Farrah Zalla and Emma Biel and juniors Sydney Closinski, Megan McGrath and Dharma Makarowsky also scored once apiece.

  • Lopata matched her career-best marks in goals (3) and total points (6).
