PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 12 St. John Fisher men's volleyball team outlasted No. 17 New Paltz for a five-set victory on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Manning and Napier Varsity Gym.
The Cardinals improved to 22-7 overall and 4-2 in the United Volleyball Conference. New Paltz fell to 11-12 (3-3 UVC) with its second consecutive five-set loss.
How It Happened

The Cardinals struggled in the first set, hitting just .161, but they did enough to prevail 26-24. After falling behind 24-23, Sonepith Keoviengsamay slammed a kill, Ian Rauh recorded a service ace and Griffin Stella and Gavin Newman teamed up for a block to secure the victory.

The Cardinals slammed 11 kills and hit .529 as they rolled to a 25-15 victory in the second set.

New Paltz rallied back to force a fifth set with a 25-23 third-set win and a 25-22 fourth-set win.

The Cardinals regrouped in the fifth set, as they recorded eight kills and hit .571. New Paltz held a 9-7 lead before the Cardinals scored four points in a row to take a two-point lead, 11-9.

The Cardinals went on a 4-1 run to secure the 15-11 victory after New Paltz cut its deficit to 11-10. Casey Jackson had a pair of kills in the match-ending stretch.

Keoviengsamay, after slamming a career-high 15 kills and hitting .417 against No. 1 NYU on Saturday, had a team-high 14 kills and hit .478 against New Paltz. He also had a season-high three total blocks.

Stella recorded 13 kills and logged a team-high .565 hitting percentage. His nine total blocks marked a career-high.

Rauh had seven kills while hitting .333 to go along with five total blocks.

Jackson had 10 kills while hitting .300 in the match. He added two block assists.

Newman amassed 36 assists and two total blocks.
