PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 12 St. John Fisher men's volleyball team (21-7) fell to No. 1 NYU (21-0) in four sets before sweeping Houghton (0-16) on Saturday afternoon at Manning and Napier Varsity Gym.
Match 1: NYU 3, St. John Fisher 1 (How It Happened)

The top-ranked, unbeaten Violets slammed 13 kills and hit well over .400 as it beat Fisher 25-21 in the first set.

The Cardinals held a 16-14 lead in the second set before the Violets ripped off five consecutive points to take a 19-16 lead.

The Cardinals pulled within one point twice at the end of the set, but each time NYU responded with a kill to stave off a rally.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set and stayed ahead until NYU went on a 6-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. After a timeout, the Cardinals rattled off four straight points, two via kills by Sonepith Keoviengsamay, to take a 24-21 lead.

Keoviengsamay finished off the 25-22 set victory with another kill moments later.

The Cardinals got off to another hot start in the fourth set, getting out to a 7-3 lead.

NYU went on a 7-3 run to tie the match at 13 and held on to slim leads the rest of the way en route to a 25-22 victory, which secured the match.

Keoviengsamay slammed a career-high 15 kills and hit .417 in the match.

Seniors Ian Rauh and Gavin Newman each recorded four blocks. Senior Trace La Robardiere had 15 digs.

Newman had 43 assists as part of his sixth match this season with 40 or more assists.

The Cardinals honored Newman for surpassing 2,000 career assists before the match. He recently joined Paul Hackford as the second player in Fisher history to record 2,000 or more career assists.
Match 2: St. John Fisher 3, Houghton 0 (How It Happened)

The Cardinals won the first set 25-10, the second 25-11 and the third 25-8, completing the sweep in under an hour.

The Cardinals scored 12 straight points in the third set to take a 19-1 lead.

Junior Jimmy Roberts recorded a career-high nine kills while hitting .692. He also had three service aces.

Sophomore Nick Tartagilia slammed a career-high eight kills and hit .400.
