Baseball Drops Sunday Night Game To UR

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher baseball team rallied late after trailing by nine runs through six innings, but five errors that led to seven runs loomed large at the end of a 17-12 loss to the University of Rochester on Sunday night at Towers Field.

The Cardinals lost their third straight game and fell to 5-8 overall. UR improved to 4-6 and won its third straight game.

How It Happened

  • Tristan Datta put the Yellowjackets up 2-1 with a solo home run in the second inning, but the Cardinals came right back to tie the game in the top half of the third when Mario Cubello plated Ryan Vanderlip on an infield single.

  • Aided by a Fisher error and a wild pitch, Rochester pushed across seven runs in the bottom of the third, with three being unearned, to take a 9-2 lead.

  • Rochester scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push its lead to 13-4. A pair of Fisher fielding errors led to three UR runs in that frame.

  • The Cardinals started chipping away at their nine-run deficit in the top of the seventh inning. Noah Pohrte cut UR's lead to 13-7 with a bases-clearing double that scored Austin Droge, Jake Crantz and Matthew Arnold

  • After holding UR scoreless in the bottom half of the seventh, Cubello ripped a solo home run to left and Crantz drilled a three-run homer to center to bring the Cardinals within two, 13-11. Droge scored on a fielding error later that inning to make it a one-run game.

  • Rochester responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs, one of them scoring as a result of another Fisher error, to take a 17-12 lead.

Game Notes

  • Pohrte, who recorded his first extra-base hit of the season, drove in a career-high three runs. Crantz went 2-for-4 with his second homer of the season and tied his career high with three RBI.

  • Five Cardinals had multi-hit games. Jack Griffin recorded his second four-hit game of the season.

  • The Cardinals totaled 15 hits as a team, their second most in a game this season.
