Perry Has Big Day As Baseball Pounds Elmira In Doubleheader

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher baseball team scored 35 runs and mashed 28 hits as it swept Elmira in a doubleheader to open Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday at Holding Point Baseball Field. The Cardinals improved to 7-8 on the season.

Freshman Jordan Perry led the Cardinals' offensive outburst, driving in 11 runs while going 9-for-10 at the plate. He had four doubles, all in the second game of the doubleheader, a triple and a home run.

Game 1: St. John Fisher 19, Elmira 5

Freshman Jordan Perry hit his first collegiate grand slam in the first inning to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead. In the second, junior infielder Jack Griffin plated one with a sacrifice fly, and Perry brought home another on an infield single to make it 6-1.

The Cardinals added four runs in the third, with three coming on senior Mario Cubello's home run to left field. They went ahead 12-2 in the fourth inning on Perry's triple down the right field line and senior Jake Crantz's single to left.

Junior Benjamin Huckans hit a two-run homer, Fisher's third long ball of the ballgame, as part of a seven-run sixth inning that made the score 19-4. Graduate senior catcher Andrew Roman also drove in a pair in that frame with a double to left.

Perry had five hits in five at-bats and drove in a career-high six runs. Cubello (3), Griffin, Huckans (2), Roman (2) and freshman infielder Ryan Vanderlip also drove in multiple runs for Fisher.

The Cardinals tied their season high in hits (17) and runs (19).

Junior Ethan Fulton earned credit for the win on the mound. He allowed just three runs on seven hits and a walk in 4.2 innings of work.

Game 2: St. John Fisher 16, Elmira 4

Perry continued raking in the second leg of the doubleheader, as he plated three as part of Fisher's five-run first inning with a double to left field. Freshman catcher Scott Sleurs drove home a run with a single and later scored to make it 5-0.

Elmira scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to cut its deficit in half (8-4) before the Cardinals broke things open with seven runs in the top half of the sixth inning. Senior Jimmy McCardle had the big blow in that frame, drilling a three-run home run to right to put the Cardinals ahead 15-4.

Sophomore Robert Leach pitched three innings and struck out five batters. He allowed three runs and walked four batters.

Sophomore Luke Horton worked four innings, giving up a run on six hits.
