Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tomasso's Massive Performance Leads Women's Basketball To Crucial E8 Win Over Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Less than 24 hours after one of her most forgettable games, St. John Fisher senior guard Sidney Tomasso had her best collegiate performance as the Cardinals beat Brockport 70-67 on Saturday afternoon at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

Tomasso, who shot 0 of 13 from the field and scored just four points in a loss to Geneseo on Friday, set career-highs in points (32) and rebounds (17) in the Cardinals' crucial Empire 8 victory on Saturday. The Cardinals improved to 17-5 overall and handed Brockport (19-3 overall) its first Empire 8 loss of the season.

Fisher, Brockport and Geneseo, all 12-1 in the E8, will enter the final three games of the regular season still jockeying to be the top seed in the conference tournament, which begins Feb. 22. Geneseo plays at Brockport to conclude the regular season on Feb. 18.

Tomasso's 32 points rank ninth on St. John Fisher's single-game scoring list. Her 17 rebounds marked the sixth-most by a Fisher player in a single game.

Junior guard Presleigh Brunner also had an explosive offensive performance for the Cardinals, scoring a career-high 21 points on 9 of 20 shooting (3 of 4 from three).

How It Happened

  • After an even first quarter (16-16) during which neither team led by more than five, the Cardinals went on a 13-5 run in the second to take a 31-24 lead. Tomasso (seven points) and Brunner (six points) led the Cardinals in scoring in that stretch.

  • Brockport cut Fisher's lead to three with 1:14 remaining in the half, but senior guard Emily McLaughlin's 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds sent the Cardinals into the break up by six, 34-28.

  • Tomasso scored eight of the Cardinals' first nine points in the second half as Fisher built a 10-point lead (43-33), its largest of the game. However, Brockport did enough to keep the game within reach and used an 8-0 run at the end of the third quarter to pull even at 50.

  • With the score tied at 62 in the final three minutes of the game, Brunner nailed a 3-pointer to put the Cardinals ahead 65-62.

  • After Brockport's Cam Tooley made a three to tie the game on the subsequent possession, Brunner again connected from deep to give the Cardinals a 68-65 lead with 1:41 left.

  • The Cardinals made just enough free throws (2 of 4) down the stretch to secure the crucial Empire 8 victory.

Game Notes

  • Tomasso, the reigning Empire 8 Player of the Year, recorded her eighth double-double of the season. She has 12 total in her collegiate career.
