Turnovers Plague Women's Basketball In Senior Day Loss To Russell Sage

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Turnovers plagued the St. John Fisher University women's basketball team in an 80-75 Senior Day loss to Russell Sage on Saturday afternoon at the Manning and Napier Varsity Gym.

The Cardinals dropped to 18-6 (13-2 Empire 8) with the loss, which put a significant dent in their chances to earn the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament, which begins Feb. 22. Sage improved to 10-14 (8-7 Empire 8) and snapped a string of 17 consecutive losses to Fisher with the victory.

The Cardinals turned the ball over 21 times, with 15 of those giveaways coming in the second half. Fisher turned the ball over 10 times in the fourth quarter alone.

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals got off to a slow start but settled in, dominating Sage 17-8 in the second quarter en route to a 37-25 halftime lead. Fisher led by 13 to 16 points from the midway mark of the second quarter until the end of the third quarter before allowing Sage to creep back into the game. The Gators ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run to cut Fisher's lead to nine, 57-48.

  • The Gators' momentum and the Cardinals' struggles continued into the fourth quarter.

  • Sage, which outscored Fisher 32-18 over the final 10 minutes, kept the game within reach the entire quarter – thanks to 10 Fisher turnovers – and took its first lead (70-68) on a layup by Kallie Hopkins with 2:40 left.

  • Senior guard Sidney Tomasso gave the Cardinals the lead back, nailing a 3-pointer with 2:20 left to make it 71-70. But that lead was fleeting as Layla Acosta responded with a triple of her own about 20 seconds later to put Sage ahead 73-71. The Gators held the lead the rest of the way.

  • Accosta led the Gators with 15 points in the fourth quarter. She scored 23 points total in while shooting 8 of 19 overall (2 of 6 from three) and 5 of 6 from the foul line.

Game Notes

  • Tomasso had 22 points and 14 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season and 14th of her career.

  • Senior guard Katie Moravec led the Cardinals with 23 points. She shot 7 of 10 from the field, 3 of 4 from three and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

  • Junior guard Presleigh Brunner also finished in double figures with 10 points.

  • Sage scored 25 points off Fisher's 21 turnovers.
