How They Got Here

St. John Fisher: The Cardinals scored twice in the fourth quarter to secure a 5-2 victory over No. 5-seeded Houghton in the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament on Saturday at Growney Stadium. Sophomore attacker Avery McLaughlin tallied five points on two goals and an assist. 

Geneseo: The Knights had a first-round bye after finishing the regular season 18-1 overall and 10-0 in E8 play. 

With A Win… 

St. John Fisher would… advance to the Empire 8 championship game for the eighth time in program history and second time under head coach Lauren Scorza… avenge its loss to Geneseo in the E8 semifinals last season… snap a six-game losing streak to Geneseo. 

Geneseo would… advance to the E8 title game for the second year in a row… win its seventh straight game against Fisher.

Series Snapshot: The Knights own an 8-5 edge in the series, which began in 2013. The Cardinals won five straight games against the Knights from 2015-19. 

Postseason Meetings: The Knights beat the Cardinals 2-0 in the Empire 8 semifinals last November. 

Last Meeting: Geneseo blanked Fisher 4-0 back on Oct. 1 behind three goals from Ella Greico.

1 - The Cardinals have won seven E8 regular-season contests in three of head coach Lauren Scorza's four seasons. Fisher has had a winning record in conference play every season under Scorza. 

2 - The Cardinals have won an Empire 8 Tournament game in each of the last three seasons. 

3 - Sophomore attacker Avery McLaughlin ranks fifth in the Empire 8 with 32 points on 12 goals and eight assists. She needs just one more point to move into a tie for 10th on the Cardinals' single-season points list. 

4 - Junior midfielder Mary Kate McPhee has been equally as productive offensively, as she’s seventh in the E8 with 30 points on 11 goals and eight assists. 

5 - This marks the first season in which the Cardinals have had two players – McLaughlin and McPhee – record 30 points or more since Bre Socker (62 pts) and Lindsay Scott (37 pts) did so in 2019. 

6 - The Cardinals have won the Empire 8 Tournament three times – in 2016, 2020 and 2021.
