Bird's Eye View - 2019 Field Hockey

Socker and Scott Celly

After reaching the Empire 8 title game in two of the last three seasons, the Cardinals reloaded for another run at the conference crown in 2019.

With one of the top offenses in the nation, the Cardinals got off to a hot start with six wins in their first seven games.  Fisher’s momentum continued to build in conference play after going 7-0 to nail down the Empire 8 Regular Season Title for the first time since 2016.

Here are the top moments from Fisher’s season:

Aug. 27, 2019: A Lot to Look Forward To

The St. John Fisher College field hockey team returned to campus early in anticipation of their 2019 season as the Cardinals begin their quest for a conference title at 5 p.m. on Friday when William Smith takes the turf inside Growney Stadium.

The Cardinals look to build on a second-straight season of 15 wins that saw head coach Victoria Bothner's squad make a run all the way to the Empire 8 Championship Final last year. Bothner, who has led Fisher to an overall record of 73-28, has qualified for the postseason in each of six seasons and is confident that this year's team has the potential to accomplish something special.

Aug. 30, 2019: Twice as Nice - Socker Scores Twice to Down Herons in Season-Opener

Bre Socker scored twice and took a game-high 15 shots as the St. John Fisher College field hockey team overwhelmed visiting William Smith College, 3-1, on Friday night in the Cardinals' season-opener at Growney Stadium.  With the win, the Cardinals improved to 1-0 while the Herons dipped to 0-1.

It didn't take long for Fisher to put William Smith on the defensive as Socker forced a turnover near midfield and worked through the visitors' defense before depositing a shot into the back of the cage to make it a one-goal affair in just the fourth minute.

Less than 10 minutes later, Socker was at it again as Lindsay Scott sent a pass to the middle of the field that found the junior forward's stick as she worked around the keeper before uncorking a shot for her second goal of the game.

Sept. 7, 2019: Gimme Five…Palma's Five-Point Day Lifts Fisher to Another Win

The St. John Fisher College field hockey team stayed perfect for the 2019 season with a 4-1 victory against St. Lawrence University at Growney Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Gianna Palma tallied two goals while Bre Socker scored one and added two assists as the Cardinals moved to 2-0 while the Saints dropped to 1-3.

As the first quarter got underway, neither offense was able to generate any solid scoring opportunities as Fisher's defense did not allow a single shot in the opening frame. The scoreless trend did not continue into the second period, however, as Socker sent the ball to the front of the net and Palma was there to put her stick on it and chip it home for her first goal of the season.

Trailing by a goal early in the second stanza, St. Lawrence would respond quickly as the crowd still celebrated Palma's tally when the Saints sent a strike that tied the game at one goal aside. That score would carry over into halftime with the Cardinals leading the shot total, 9-1.
