HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Sam Current scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the St. John Fisher field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Houghton on Saturday. The Cardinals improved to  5-4 overall (3-1 Empire 8), while Houghton drops to 6-3 (2-3 Empire 8).
How it Happened
The opening quarter saw strong defensive play from both teams, with the Cardinals taking just three shots and Houghton managing only one. 
Just over three minutes into the second quarter, Houghton's Lilyana Good found space in the circle and sent the ball into the back of the net to open the scoring. Just thirty five seconds later, the Cardinals responded quickly and earned a penalty stroke. Sam Current stepped up and placed it past Annika Galen to even the score. 
The Cardinals came out strong in the third quarter, with Mary Kate McPhee scoring their second goal on a driven shot just under three minutes in. Less than two minutes later, Houghton responded with Kylee Barshinger burying a goal to even the score once again.
During the fourth quarter, both teams had chances to score, but the defenses held strong, sending the game into overtime. Just under five minutes into the extra fame, the Cardinals earned another penalty stroke, and Current stepped up once again, pushing a shot past Galen to secure the victory.
