ALFRED, N.Y. – Four players scored multiple goals in the St. John Fisher field hockey team's 10-0 drubbing of Alfred University on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals improved to 6-4 overall (4-1 Empire 8) and recorded their sixth win in their last eight games. Alfred dropped to 0-11 overall (0-5 Empire 8).
Sophomore attacker Avery McLaughlin led the Cardinals with a career-high eight points on three goals and a pair of assists. Junior midfielder Mary Kate McPhee scored twice and tallied two assists as part of a six-point night.
Sophomore midfielder Sydney Byrns and freshman attacker Callie Smith tallied five points apiece with two goals and an assist.
How it Happened
The Cardinals wasted no time in the opening quarter, getting on the board 41 seconds in when McPhee scored her first goal of the night on an assist from McLaughlin. Just under two minutes later, the Cardinals struck again – this time with McLaughlin getting on the board off a perfect pass from Byrns. With just 38 seconds left in the quarter, McLaughlin struck again, extending the Cardinals' lead to three heading into the second.
McLaughlin completed her hat trick with just under eight minutes to play in the second quarter, ripping a shot into the back of the net on an assist from McPhee.
The Cardinals went ahead 5-0 just over four minutes into the third quarter, as Taplin finished a feed from McLaughlin for her second goal of the season.
The Cardinals scored five times in the fourth quarter to put a cap on the dominant victory. Smith and Byrns scored both of their goals in the final 15 minutes, while McPhee added her second tally of the game.
