Men's Volleyball Outlasts Buffalo State, Sweeps Wittenberg

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher men's volleyball team improved to 5-0 on Friday night, outlasting Buffalo State in five sets before sweeping Wittenberg at Manning and Napier Varsity Gym. 

Match 1: St. John Fisher 3, Buffalo State 2

  • The Cardinals lost the first two sets 25-18 and 25-23 before ripping off three victories. The Cardinals won the third set 25-13, the fourth 25-21 and the fifth 15-12. 

  • Graduate senior Griffin Stella led the Cardinals with 16 kills, a career-high. He hit an impressive .727 in the match. 

  • Junior Casey Jackson slammed a career-high 14 kills and hit .609. Senior Ian Rauh tallied 10 kills. 

  • Freshman Evan Hernandez tallied a match-high three service aces. 

  • Senior setter Gavin Newman tallied 47 kills, one shy of his career-high. He also had four total blocks. 

Match 2: St. John Fisher 3, Wittenberg 0

  • The Cardinals staved off the Tigers 29-27 in the first set before commanding the rest of the match. They won the second set 25-16 and the third 25-18 to complete their third sweep of the season. 

  • Newman amassed six service aces and had 28 assists. 

  • Graduate senior Jake Baker led Fisher with 11 kills and hit over .526. 

  • Stella tallied five more kills and logged a .455 hitting percentage. 

  • Rauh had nine kills and hit .357, while Gabe La Robardiere tallied seven kills and hit .308. Rauh also had three solo blocks and one assisted block.
