PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Forward Molly Fisher scored twice, and goalkeeper Senja Matson recorded her second collegiate shutout as the St. John Fisher field hockey team beat Oswego 3-0 on Wednesday evening at Growney Stadium.
The Cardinals (1-4, 0-0 Empire 8) earned their first win of the season. The Great Lakers fell to 1-3 and lost their third consecutive contest.
Despite dominating possession in the match from the jump – St. John Fisher had 20 shots (15 on goal) to Oswego's three (one on goal) – it took the Cardinals some time to find the back of the net.
Fisher, a senior from Webster, broke through for the Cardinals early in the third quarter. The goal was her first since Oct. 28 of last season, and it marked Fisher's first score on a penalty stroke this season.
About four minutes later, senior Sarah Woods scored her third career goal (and first of this season) to put the Cardinals ahead 3-0. Freshman Avery McLaughlin got credit for the assist, earning her first collegiate point.
Fisher, who's scored multiple goals in seven collegiate games, scored her second goa of the game to make it 3-0 late in the fourth quarter. She has 30 goals with 65 total points since arriving at Fisher 2021.
Matson, a senior, made one save and earned her third career win in net. It was the Cardinals' first shoutout victory since their 8-0 win over Elmira last October.
Fisher set season highs in total shots (20), shots on goal (15) and penalty corners (11).
