PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher field hockey team (0-1) lost its season opener Friday 4-0 to William Smith College (1-0) at Growney Stadium.
Mia Batchelder got the scoring started in the first period, finding the back of the net at the 16:41 mark. The Cardinals kept the game within reach in the second and third quarters before William Smith pulled away in the fourth.
William Smith scored three times in the final frame. Caroline Kogut made it 2-0, Lily Gutch made it 3-0 and, with just more than six minutes left, Eliza Freeland added the final tally to make it 4-0.
St. John Fisher goalkeeper Senja Matson made nine saves while facing 15 shots on goal. Sarah Woods recorded a defensive save for the Cardinals.
William Smith goalkeeper Jeremiah Baker made two saves while facing only a few shots.
The Cardinals face No. 23 Ithaca College at 1 p.m. Sunday in Ithaca.
