MIDDLEBURY, VT – The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed in the first round of the 2024 DIII NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday, taking on Endicott College. The Cardinals jumped out to a 7-2 first quarter lead and cruised the rest of the way to a 17-8 victory. That result makes it back-to-back years with a victory in the first-round of NCAA play.
Despite falling behind 1-0 to the Gulls, Fisher responded by tallying four unanswered goals.
Hanna Kumpf scored the first two just 40 second apart, and then
Sydney Carpenter and
Emma Biel added one each to put the team ahead 4-1 before Endicott scored their second.
Farrah Zalla scored her first goal of the day before Kumpf recorded another pair of goals to give the team a 7-2 advantage after one quarter of play. Carpenter kicked things off in the second with a goal, but then the Gulls tallied three consecutive scores to cut the deficit to 8-5. Kumpf and Carpenter stopped the run and gave Fisher a 10-5 lead at the half.
The third quarter was all Fisher as the outscored Endicott 6-0 to put the game out of reach. It began with a score by
Ellie Leisen and then in a two-minute span, Biel,
Mary Fiorentino and Leisen all scored, pushing the score to 14-5.
Maddie Lowney scored her first of the season with 5:49 to play and then Carpenter capped things off with a score with four seconds left and the Cardinals led 16-5 going into the final frame. Biel scored the final goal for the team in the fourth and Fisher walked away with a 17-8 win.
Kumpf impressed with a seven-point performance, scoring five goals, while assisting on two more. Carpenter won 12 draw controls, while scoring four goals of her own. Fiorentino assisted on three goals and added one goal to total four points as well.
Maggie Cross earned the start and win, making three saves in 60 minutes of action.
Up next for the Cardinals is the no. 1 ranked Middlebury College. The matchup is slated for Sunday, May 12 with a start time of 1 p.m.
