BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team took both ends of a doubleheader against Buffalo State on Tuesday, extending their win streak to four.
GAME 1: Fisher 10, Buffalo State 2 (Six innings)
Fisher exploded for eight runs in the top of the first to grab an early lead they never relinquished. The team later added another run in the second finally one in the eighth to ensure an early end to the contest due to the run-rule.
Juniors Mari Spitz and Cassidy Evanetski had two RBI each in the game, while junior Maddie Donlin, junior Katie Mannis, and freshman CC Holmes also drove in a runner each.
Junior Ainsley Evanetski started the game and threw three innings of three-run ball, striking out four batters and allowing a run. She was relieved by freshman Molly Kuhn, who went the remaining three innings, allowing a run on three hits while striking out three.
GAME 2: Fisher 2, Buffalo State 1
A two-run third inning was all that Fisher had in the second game of the doubleheader, but it also proved all they'd need. With one out and a runner on first, freshman Taylor Shackleton singled down to right. The right-fielder committed an error, allowing Donlin to score and give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead. The next batter, junior Amalia DeMartino, doubled her home to make it 2-0. It was one of three hits for DeMartino in the game. Shackleton and Holmes had two hits each.
While the Bengals scored a run in the bottom half of the inning, the Cardinals kept them off the scoreboard the rest of the way for the win.
Junior Cassidy Ormond went all seven innings in the circle, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out five.
The Cardinals return to campus on Saturday, April 13, when they host Russell Sage College. The doubleheader starts at 1:00 P.M.
