HONEOYE FALLS, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team swept Russell Sage College on Saturday, 8-4 and 10-1, in games moved to the Honeoye Falls-Lima High School turf field due to weather concerns.
Game 1: Fisher 8, Sage 4
The Cardinals won the first game behind a 12-hit attack that also took advantage of four errors by the opposing Gators. Freshman first baseman Taylor Shackleton started the scoring in the bottom of the third, bringing home sophomore second baseman Madi Rose on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. The Cardinals increased their lead with four runs in the fourth, including a Shackleton double to extend the lead to 5-0. Although Sage responded with two runs in the fifth, a three-run bottom of the fifth for Fisher helped put the game away.
Shackleton, Rose, junior center fielder Maddie Donlin, junior shortstop Amalia DeMartino, and freshman CC Holmes all had two hits in the game. Holmes and DeMartino each had a triple.
In the circle, junior Ainsley Evanetski notched her seventh win of the year, throwing a complete game while allowing eight hits and three earned runs on the day while striking out eight.
Game 2: Fisher 10, Sage 1 (5 innings)
Fisher won the second game in a run-rule shortened five innings, again thanks to a strong offensive showing. Donlin led the way, tripling in three with the bases loaded in the second inning to start the scoring at 3-0 before scoring herself on a Shackleton single. A double by freshman Emily McManus extended the lead to 5-0. The Cards added three more in the third and two more in the fourth, allowing them to run-rule the Gators in five.
Donlin ended the day 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead the team. DeMartino ended the game 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Holmes notched another triple.
Junior Cassidy Ormond moved to 8-2 on the season with a complete game victory, striking out five and spreading six hits in five innings of work without an earned run.
The Cardinals, winners of six straight, now head on the road for a doubleheader against SUNY Fredonia on Tuesday, April 16. Game 1 is 3:00 P.M.
