Softball takes two from Fredonia as Ormond flirts with no-hitter

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team swept SUNY Fredonia on both ends of a doubleheader on Tuesday, taking game one, 9-1, before junior Cassidy Ormond came within two outs of her second no-hitter of the season in the second game, a 6-0 Cardinals victory.

Game 1: Fisher 9, Fredonia 1 (6 innings)

The Cardinals forced an early end to the opening game thanks to run rule, as freshman Emily McManus, junior Cassidy Evanetski, and senior Kelly Cournoyer all hit home runs in the win.

The three home runs were the most in a single game for the Cardinals since they hit three against Cortland on April 5, 2022. McManus' home run increased her total on the year to seven- the most in the Empire 8.

Junior Aisnley Evanetski led Fisher in the circle, throwing five innings of two-hit ball while striking out eight. Freshman Molly Kuhn finished the game with a hitless sixth.

Game 2: Fisher 6, Fredonia 0

Cassidy Ormond, who threw a perfect game against RIT earlier this season, threatened to do so again in game two. The Cicero native didn't allow a baserunner until a sixth-inning walk and held the Blue Devils hitless until there were just two outs left in the game as she flirted with her second no-hitter of the season. Still, she finished the game with a complete game one-hit shutout while striking out seven for her ninth win of the season.

Offensively, McManus again left the ballpark, hitting a three-run home run in the third for her conference-leading eighth round-tripper of the season. She earlier had driven in a run on a Fredonia error and ended the game with four RBI.

Juniors Amalia DeMartino, Katie Mannis, and Mari Spitz all doubled.

The Cardinals, now winners of eight straight, will return to action on Wednesday at Oswego State. Game one starts at 3:00 P.M.
