PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team remained undefeated in Empire 8 play on Saturday, sweeping the Elmira College Soaring Eagles by the scores of 11-1 and 9-1.
Before the games, Fisher celebrated Senior Day, honoring this year's class of seniors: Maddie Nadrich and Kelly Cournoyer. The two received rounds of applause and then had a ceremonial first catch with their parents. Congratulations to Maddie and Kelly!
Game 1: Fisher 11, Elmira 1 (5 innings)
The Cardinals won their first game by run-rule behind a powerful offensive attack keyed by one of the day's seniors: Kelly Cournoyer. The third-baseman had three hits in the game, driving home two runs and scoring twice herself.
Freshman left fielder Emily McManus continued her home run-filled season, going deep to center in the third for a solo shot to make it 3-1 and chalk up her second RBI of the game (she earlier drove in a run on a groundout). McManus has eight round-trippers this season so far, tied for 10th in the program's single-season record book.
Juniors Cassidy Evanetski and Katie Mannis also plated two runs in the run, while Ainsley Evanetski went five innings in the circle while allowing just one hit and an earned run. The Brighton graduate struck out 10 as she picked up her ninth win of the season.
Game 2: Fisher 9, Elmira 1 (5 innings)
Another run-rule victory came in game two, as junior catcher Mari Spitz went 2-for-2 with 4 RBI in the win while junior Cassidy Ormond and freshman CC Holmes combined to allow just two hits in the game.
Spitz opened the scoring in the first with a two-run single, then added more an inning later by plating two on a double to right. Cournoyer, sophomore Leah Fron, junior Maddie Donlin, freshman Taylor Shackleton, and junior Amalia DeMartino also brought runs home.
Ormond won her 10th game of the season, striking out eight in four innings while allowing just one earned run. Holmes relieved her in the fifth and allowed just a base hit as she finished the game.
The Cardinals will have a relatively quick turnaround, as they host Clarkson University on Monday, April 22. Game one starts at 3:00 P.M.
