Baseball sweeps Elmira

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team swept the Elmira College Soaring Eagles on Sunday in a doubleheader to complete a 3-0 homestand against them.

The Cardinals won the first game, 4-0, before winning the second game in a seven-inning run rule score of 11-0.

GAME 1: Cardinals 4, Elmira 0 (7 innings)

Fisher scored in just two innings of the first game, but those were more than enough thanks to a combined shutout by sophomore Ethan Fulton, who struck out nine and allowed just three hits in the game.

Junior Jimmy McArdle had the biggest hit of the game, knocking a ball just outside of the second baseman's reach with the bases loaded and two outs in the second for a three-run double to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Senior James Murphy, who went 2-for-3 in the game, added an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI single to left to make it 4-0.

The Cardinals combined for six stolen bases in the win, including two each by Jake Crantz and Noah Pohrte

GAME 2: Cardinals 11, Elmira 0 (7 innings)

St. John Fisher completed the sweep with a seven-inning run rule victory, powered by a great afternoon at the plate by Nick Lemire. The senior out of Ballston Lake went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the game, including a two RBI double in the third. Lemire also scored twice and stole a bag. Senior James Murphy also notched three RBI, with two on a double in the first to open scoring 2-0 and then a sacrifice fly later in the game.

Eight of the nine Cardinals starters had at least one hit and all nine reached base at least once. Lemire and sophomore Jake Crantz led with three hits each. Sophomore Benjamin Huckans had the first triple of his collegiate career in the fourth, bringing the score up to 10-0 and ensuring the 10-run rule would be in play by the seventh.

On the mound, junior Tanner Frank started the game and threw four innings of four-hit ball, striking out five in the process. He was followed by sophomore Cam Kingsley, who struck out five while allowing just one hit in three innings of relief.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, April 9, at Oswego State for a doubleheader. Game one is at 1:00 P.M.
