Cardinals Sweep Saxons At Home To Open Empire 8 Play

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team were impressive on Saturday in a doubleheader against Alfred University to begin Empire 8 play. The Cardinals took care of business in both games, winning 8-0 in six innings in game one and 8-0 in five innings in game two. Fisher now hold a 12-4 overall record and 2-0 in conference play.
 
Game One: Fisher 8 – Saxons 0 (6 inn)
The Cardinals scored their first run in the third inning, with Maddie Donlin singling up the middle to score CC Holmes. In the sixth inning, Fisher scored seven runs to end the game. Holmes pressured the defense with a hard hit ball that led to an error and two runs crossing home plate. Madi Rose singled to left field to drive in a run and then back-to-back singles by Donlin and Taylor Shackleton brought in a run each to make the score 6-0. Emily McManus ended the game with a two-run double to right field.
 
Ainsley Evanetski was perfect through three innings before giving up her first hit in the fourth. In total, she recorded 6.0 innings of scoreless ball, allowing three hits and striking out seven. Donlin was 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Rose, Shackleton and McManus all had multi-hit games.
 
Game Two: Fisher 8 – Saxons 0 (5 inn)
The Cardinals once again got off to a good start by scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Shackleton. In the third, McManus sent a rocket over the scoreboard in right centerfield for her fifth homerun of the season. Two more runs came home in the fourth thanks to a passed ball and an RBI single by Donlin. In the fifth, Cassidy Evanetski sent a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Liv Godley and after a single by Rose to bring in Kelly Cournoyer, Donlin ended the game with a two RBI double.
 
Cassidy Ormond earned the win after pitching 5.0 innings. She tossed a shutout, while allowing four hits, walking three and striking out three. Donlin continued her hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.
 
Fisher will head to Buffalo State on Tuesday, April 9 for a road doubleheader. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
