UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team hit the road on Saturday to conclude the regular season with an Empire 8 matchup against Utica University. The Cardinals grabbed an early lead and rode that to a 16-5 victory.
Colin Blakeslee kicked it off with a goal three minutes into the game.
Brett Seaman,
Matthew Kemmis and
Timmy Salit all scored in the first quarter to jump out to a 4-0 lead after one. Salit was the lone scorer in the second, and the Cardinals went into halftime with a 5-0 advantage.
The scoring run continued in the third quarter, as
Brady Mason converted on a man up advantage. That was followed up by three consecutive scores by Salit to make it 9 unanswered scores. After the Pioneers broke that streak,
Ethan Kesselring and
Braeden McNeill scored their first of the day. Heading into the final quarter, Fisher led 11-2. In the final frame, the Cardinals scored five goals to the Pioneers three.
Garrett Sutton and
Griffin Dautrich both scored a pair before Kesselring wrapped things up with a man up goal with under a minute to go.
Salit's five goals helped him lead the team in points.
Jordan Leuze also had five points, but this time doing it with five assists.
Ben Hammond earned the win with zero goals allowed in 30 minutes of action, while making four saves.
Up next for the Cardinals is the Empire 8 Championship Semi-Final on Wednesday, May 1. They will take on no. 4 seed Hartwick College at 4 p.m. at home.
