Baseball wins both ends of doubleheader at Oneonta State

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team won both games of a doubleheader on Saturday at Oneonta State. The Cardinals defeated the Red Dragons 3-2 in game one, before securing game two 6-1. Fisher now have an overall record of 19-17.

GAME 1: FISHER 3, ONEONTA STATE 2

Junior center fielder Jimmy McCardle took one for the team, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to bring home the go-ahead run as the Cardinals got back in the win column.

Earlier, Fisher trailed 2-0 going into the seventh, but an RBI double by sophomore Benjamin Huckans and an error by the Red Dragons let the Cardinals tie it up. Senior third-baseman James Murphy aided in the offense with two hits.

On the mound, senior Patrick McGuire went six innings, allowing an earned run while striking out five for a no-decision. Junior Tanner Frank earned the win in relief, going three innings while allowing two hits and striking out one.

GAME 2: FISHER 6, ONEONTA STATE 1

Murphy went 4-for-4 with an RBI and senior Andrew Roman hit his first home run as a Cardinal as Fisher took their second win of the day.

Sophomore Jake Crantz opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run triple and the Cardinals never trailed as three pitchers combined to allow just two hits and one run. Sophomore Conner Walker started the game and earned the win for three innings of work before being relieved for three no-hit innings by freshman Luke Horton, who struck out four. Senior Anthony Lang finished the game with a hitless seventh.

The Cardinals play their final out-of-conference game of the regular season on Wednesday, May 1, when they host SUNY Brockport at 4 P.M.
