PITTSFORD, N.Y.—The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team will play their final two regular season games this week, with a home game against Union College and a road Empire 8 game at Utica University.
Empire 8 Catch-Up
The Cardinals secured the no. 1 seed in the Empire 8 Championship with their win over Russell Sage College and thye hold a 5-0 conference record. Alfred University are in second place with a 4-1 conference mark and Nazareth University are in third place with a 3-1 E8 mark, they both have clinched a post season berth. The Gators along with Hartwick College and Utica, are all battling for the final spot.
Nationally Ranked Garnet Chargers
Union College are currently ranked no. 8 in the nation according to Inside Lacrosse. They hold a 10-3 overall record and are 4-2 in the Liberty League behind no. 4 RPI, no. 2 RIT and no. 5 St. Lawrence. The Garnet Charges are coming off a 19-9 win over Vassar College to clinch a spot in the Liberty League playoffs. Offensively, they are led by Peter Kip with 49 points (31 goals, 18 assists) and Michael Shaw with 48 points (32 goals, 16 assists). Their top goalkeeper is Dan Donahue and in 13 starts, he has made 165 saves for a .541 save percentage and allows 11.27 goals per game.
Finale At Pioneers
Utica University have a 5-9 overall record and are 1-4 in conference play. They will play SUNY Poly on Wednesday before hosting the Cardinals on Saturday. They are coming off a win against Keuka College that snapped a five-game losing streak. Offensively, Sam Serrano leads with 43 points (29 goals, 14 assists) and behind him is Ryan Considine with 40 points (25 goals, 15 assists). Patrick Oswald is their leading goalkeeper and in 14 starts, he has allowed 138 goals (11.78 per game) and made 160 saves (.535 save percentage).
Player to Watch
Ben Hammond was named Empire 8 Goalie of the Week after making 14 saves and allowing just three goals in over 70 minutes of action; helping lead the Cardinals to two Empire 8 wins during the week. He stopped 12 shots and allowed three goals in just over 40 minutes in a win over Alfred on Wednesday. On Saturday, Hammond made a pair of saves and did not allow a goal in a win over Russell Sage College. He finished the week with an .824 save percentage.
