Baseball splits with Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team split a doubleheader with Houghton on Saturday, losing game one 3-2 before winning the second game 10-4.

GAME 1: Houghton 3, Fisher 2

In a pitcher's duel between two of the best hurlers in the Empire 8, Fisher came up just short to Houghton in game one. Sophomore Ethan Fulton went six innings and struck out four, but was felled by a triple and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give Houghton all three of its runs. Fisher managed five hits against Houghton's Ethan Cetton and got within one after a bases-loaded walk to sophomore Noah Pohrte in the sixth, but they were unable to get the tying run across.

Senior Nick Lemire led Fisher in hits, with two. This was Fisher's first Empire 8 loss since the first game of a doubleheader with Russell Sage on March 26.

GAME 2: Fisher 10, Houghton 4

The Cardinals struck back in game two, as graduate student first baseman Brian Norsen led a 12-hit assault by going 3-for-4 with a walk and three RBI while finishing just a single away from the cycle. The Hamburg native doubled in the first, tripled in the third, and hit his seventh home run of the season in the eighth. Senior third baseman James Murphy also shined, going 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. Freshman left fielder Jackson Frey had two hits, a walk, and an RBI.

On the mound, senior Patrick McGuire went 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and an earned run while striking out six. Sophomore Cam Kingsley handled the rest of the sixth before sophomore Conner Walker went three innings for the save, allowing three hits and an earned run along the way.

The Cardinals are back at it on Tuesday when they head to Brockport for an out-of-conference matchup. Gametime is 4:00 P.M.
