HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team beat Houghton in the opening game of their three game series on Friday, 10-3, propelled by a six-run third inning.

The Cardinals, winners of five straight, had been at a disadvantage, trailing the Highlanders 3-0 after two innings. Then, in the third, the Cardinals loaded the bases thanks to walks and defensive miscues by their opponent before getting on the board with a bases-loaded walk to senior shortstop Nick Lemire. Graduate student first baseman Brian Norsen followed with a two-run single, before senior third baseman James Murphy put an exclamation point on the proceedings with a three-run home run, his third of the season.

That would be it for scoring until the eighth, when Norsen hit his team-leading sixth home run to make it 7-3. Lemire and junior center fielder Jimmy McCardle added further insurance in the ninth for the final 10-1 score.

Norsen and Murphy each finished with three RBI. On the mound, sophomore Cam Kingsley earned the win in relief with 2.2 innings of no-hit ball, striking out three. Graduate student Hunter Walsh had a five-inning save, allowing just two hits sending down five with strikeouts. 

The Cardinals, now over .500 at 15-14 overall and 11-1 in conference, continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader. Game one starts at 1:00 P.M.
