AUBURNDALE, FL – The St. John Fisher University baseball team competed Thursday evening in a double header, starting with a matchup against Buena Vista University and ending with a contest against Trine University. The Cardinals were defeated in both encounters and sees their record shift to 2-6 on the season.
Fisher 6 – Beavers 14
The Cardinals fell behind early to Buena Vista after surrendering a three-run homerun in the first inning.
Brian Norsen put the team on the board in the third with the single through the left side and drove in
Ethan Fulton. In the top of the seventh inning,
Mario Cubello and
Nick Lemire each drove in runs that cut the deficit to 5-4, but the Beavers answered with a big inning of their own, scoring seven runs and creating a deficit Fisher could not overcome.
Jake Crantz finished game one going 3-for-5 with a double. Lemire went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Connor Walker recorded the loss after going 3.2 innings. Came Kingsley came in for relief and pitched 2.1 innings. A combination of
Dylan Becker,
Daniel Dorman and
Nathan Weber rounded out the rest of the outs.
Fisher 11 – Thunder 16
The second game of the evening was an action back matchup from beginning to end. Fisher jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after two, including driving six runs in the first. Norsen kicked it off with an RBI single and later crossed home plate himself with a wild pitch.
Dominic Guccia grounded out, but in doing so it allowed Lemire to score a run.
Benjamin Huckans followed a similar path as Norsen, recording a hit to drive in a run and later scoring by way of a wild pitch. Norsen once again scored in the second to put Fisher up 7-0.
However, Trine responded with six runs of their own between the second and third inning to bring them right back into the game. In the fourth, Huckans and Meeker both put the ball in play that allowed two more runs to score, putting the Cardinals ahead 9-6. The Thunder answered in the fourth by tying the game 9-9 and in the fifth, taking control 12-9. Fisher was unable to make to the comeback and fell, 16-11. Norsen was an impressive 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Lemire, Joe Reggiero and
Jake Meeker all had two hit games.
