Cardinals Defeat Pioneers To Begin Weekend Series

UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team traveled to Utica University for the start of a three-game weekend series against the Pioneers. The Cardinals took an early lead and added to it late in the game to walk away with a 15-5 win, moving their record to 5-11 on the season.

Fisher got on the board first in the third inning, with Jake Crantz doubling to left field to score Brendan Bucello. After the Pioneers evened the game in the bottom of the frame, the Cardinals claimed a lead in the fourth that they did not give back. Benjamin Huckans hit a sacrifice fly to right field that was deep enough to bring Crantz home. In the fifth, Brian Norsen singled to left to drive in two runs and later touched home plate himself thanks to a triple by James Murphy. Murphy scored on a passed ball to make the score 6-1 through five innings of action.

The team added on to the lead, with Norsen hitting a sacrifice fly and Jake Meeker recording a two RBI single to make the score 9-1 after the sixth. Utica added a run in the sixth and seventh, both being solo home runs, but in the eighth, Dominic Guccia recorded a grand slam to push Fisher ahead 13-3. Norsen and Murphy continued to drive in runs down the stretch and the Cardinals walked away with a 15-5 win.

Norsen finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Murphy was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, two RBI and two walks. Ethan Fulton earned the win, pitching 6.0 innings of two run ball, while allowing eight hits and striking out seven. Cam Kingsley came in to close out the game, going the remaining 3.0 innings and giving up three runs on three hits, while striking out four.
