Baseball Sweep Pioneers On The Road

UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team completed their three-game series against Utica University on Saturday with a double-header. The Cardinals handled their business winning the first game 19-1 and the second 13-7.

Game One: Cardinals 19 – Pioneers 1
Fisher scored early and often in the first game of the day. Brian Norsen hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Jake Crantz and later Dominic Guccia singled through the left side, bringing in Nick Lemire to make the score 2-0. In the second inning, the scoring continued as Norsen walked with the bases loaded and then James Murphy cleared the bases with a triple to left center. Murphy crossed home plate himself to bring the score to 7-0 after two innings. The offense doubled their advantage in the third, scoring eight runs on two hits, seven walks and two hit-by-pitches. After adding four more in the seventh, the Cardinals secured the 19-1 win.

Murphy and Guccia each finished with two hits and three RBI a piece. Patrick McGuire earned the start and tossed 2.0 innings of one hit ball before being replaced by Robert Leach. Leach earned the win after throwing 4.0 innings of one run baseball and striking out six. Joshua Ferris closed out the game in the seventh to secure the win.

Game Two: Cardinals 13 – Pioneers 7
In the second game it was the Pioneers that took the early lead, jumping ahead 5-1 through three innings. Fisher began their comeback with a sacrifice fly by Crantz in the fourth, and in the fifth Guccia and Matthew Arnold drove in runs to get the deficit to one. As the sixth inning began, the Cardinals trailed 7-4 until Murphy recorded an RBI single through the left side. In the eighth, Guccia tied the game with a two RBI single, and Brendan Bucello drove in what turned out to be the game winning run with a single to left field. Fisher added insurance runs in the ninth before closing the game at 13-7.

Hunter Walsh earned the win after pitching the final 3.0 innings. He gave up no runs, no hits, no walks and struck out six.

Up next for the Cardinals is a road game on Tuesday, April 2 against Ithaca College. First-pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
