Cardinals Split Home Doubleheader Against Ithaca College

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team finally hosted a home game on campus at the Softball Complex, hosting a doubleheader against Ithaca College. The Cardinals came back to win game one in walk-off fashion, but then dropped the second game despite a big seventh inning comeback.

Game One: St. John Fisher 5 – Ithaca 4
Fisher fell behind 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third but cut the deficit to just one. Cassidy Evanetski singled through the left side and Taylor Shackleton was hit by a pitch to put two on for Emily McManus to drive home. The first year doubled to right center, making the score 3-2 through 3.0 innings. In the bottom of the seventh, facing a 4-2 score, the Cardinals made their comeback. Amalia DeMartino walked before Emma MacLachlan pinch-hit and sent a homerun over the left field fence to tie the game. As the game went into extra innings, Fisher won it in the bottom of the eighth off a walk-off single by Mari Spitz to score Maddie Donlin.

Spitz finished the first game 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ainsley Evanetski pitched a complete game, tossing 8.0 innings and allowing four runs on four hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

Game Two: St. John Fisher 5 – Ithaca 9
The Cardinals were down five one through three innings, with the only score coming on a ground out by MacLachlan that scored McManus. In the top of the seventh the Bombers tallied four more runs to take a 9-1 lead, but Fisher began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the seventh. Kelly Cournoyer and C. Evanetski both walked and Madi Rose singled to load the bases. Donlin singled to left field to score the teams second run and forcing a pitching change. A couple of batters later, McManus, Spitz and Maclachlan all worked walks to score runs, but then Liv Godley was picked off at third base to end the comeback.

Rose, Donlin and Spitz all had multi-hit games. Cassidy Ormond recorded the loss after going 6.0 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four.

Up next for the Cardinals is another home matchup on Tuesday, April 2. Fisher will host SUNY Cortland at the Softball Complex with the first game starting at 3 p.m.
