ITHACA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team lost a close one to Ithaca on Saturday, 13-11.
The Cardinals jumped to an early lead, outscoring the Bombers 4-1 in the opening quarter of play, but the host team stormed back to tie it 5-5 at the half.
Although the Cardinals again took the lead, 6-5, on a score by junior Mary Fiorentino early in the third, Ithaca again retook the lead and then expanded it to an 11-7 advantage with just less than 11 minutes left in the game. The Cardinals outscored Ithaca 4-2 in the final 10 minutes, but were unable to fully make up the deficit.
Junior Sydney Carpenter led the Cardinals with four points (three goals and an assist), while senior Cara Landry and junior Emma Biel had three goals each. Fiorentino had two goals. Junior Hanna Kumpf added an assist.
On defense, sophomore Maddie Lowney had five draw controls, caused two turnovers, and pulled up three groundballs. Carpenter won four draw controls and pulled three groundballs.
Fisher returns to action on Wednesday, March 27, when they travel to William Smith to face the Brewers. Gametime is 4:30 P.M.
