PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team were at home on Friday and were hosts to local rivals, Nazareth University. The Cardinals took control early and worked their way to a 3-0 sweep to move their record to 22-3 on the season.
Fisher grabbed an early lead in the first set thanks to a kill by
Griffin Stella and back-to-back attacking errors by the Golden Flyers. A pair of kills by
Jake Baker later in the set pushed the advantage to 15-9 and four consecutive points concluded the frame and the Cardinals recorded a 25-16 win. In the second set, Naz used a 5-0 run to jump in front 11-9, but
Casey Jackson and Stella secured kills to even the score and stop the opposition momentum. With the Cardinals down 21-20. Stella ignited a 5-0 run to help the team secure the 2-0 lead with a 25-21 set victory.
In the third and final set, Fisher grabbed an early 6-0 early, but the Golden Flyers did not go away, getting back to within three at 11-8. The Cardinals responded to go back in front by seven, but Naz were persistent and came back to even the set at 23-23. After trading scores to get to 25-25, a kill by Stella and solo block by
Gavin Newman, ended the set and match to give the team the 3-0 sweep.
Baker led the way with 10 kills and added three total blocks. Stella and Jackson both contributed eight kills, with Stella doing so on an efficient .667 percentage. Newman finished the day with 32 assists, four total blocks and six digs.
The Cardinals will remain at home on Friday, March 22 when they host Elmira College for a 7 p.m. matchup.
