SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team fell on a two-out walk-off single on Wednesday to Union College, 6-5.
After falling behind 1-0 early, the Cardinals jumped ahead in the top of the fourth on consecutive bases-loaded two-out singles by freshman DH Matthew Arnold and sophomore rightfielder Benjamin Huckans to make it 3-1.
That score held for a few innings, but Union retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to move ahead, 4-3.
The Cardinals tied the contest in the top of the ninth when graduate first baseman Brian Norsen drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-4. Senior shortstop Nick Lemire followed with a single to third to put Fisher ahead, 5-4, but the team couldn't get additional insurance runs across, leaving them with just a one-run lead.
Ultimately, Fisher wasn't able to hold that lead. The Garnet Chargers tied it with one out on a wild pitch before finishing it with a single with two outs for the walkoff win.
Fisher was led offensively by Huckans, with two RBI. Senior James Murphy reached base twice via hit-by-pitch and later scored a run.
Senior left-hander Patrick McGuire had a good day on the mound, going six innings and striking out four while allowing just two hits and an unearned run.
The Cardinals will look to get back into the win column on Sunday when they head to the University of Rochester for a doubleheader with the Yellowjackets. First pitch for game one is 1:00 P.M.
