ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Rochester on Sunday.
Game 1: Fisher 10, Rochester 6
The Cardinals jumped to an early lead by scoring five in the top of the second. After getting the bases loaded with two outs, the Cardinals pushed their first across when senior Nick Lemire was hit by a pitch. The next batter, graduate student Brian Norsen, then blew the inning open with a grand slam to make it 5-0. The home run was Norsen's third of the season and second in the last four games.
The Yellowjackets made a comeback, however, scoring once in the bottom of the second and then four in the bottom of the fourth to tie it, 5-5. The game wouldn't stay tied for long, however, as junior Mario Cubello scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-5 the next half-inning.
Cubello helped Fisher get some insurance in the top of the eighth, hitting his first home run of the season with two on and two to enhance the Fisher lead to 9-5. Norsen added another insurance run in the ninth with an RBI single.
The University of Rochester scored once in the ninth, but the Cardinals held on for the 10-6 win.
Norsen led the Cardinals offensively, going 2-for-5 with five RBI including the four from his grand slam. Cubello went 2-for-6 with three RBI. Lemire was 3-for-4 with an RBI, a double, and a walk.
On the mound, graduate student Hunter Walsh earned the win with five innings of relief, spreading out eight hits while allowing just one earned run and striking out three.
Game 2: Rochester 14, Fisher 5
Fisher jumped to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a three-run double in the top of the first by junior Dominic Guccia, but the Yellowjackets responded with eight unanswered runs over the first five innings. The Cardinals narrowed the lead to 8-5 with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Rochester increased the gap throughout the rest of the game to send Fisher down in defeat.
Sophomore Benjamin Huckans had the other RBI for the Cardinals to join Guccia's three, singling in a run in the sixth. Cubello scored on a wild pitch.
Senior Christian O'Brien and senior Anthony Lang threw a hitless inning of relief each.
