Men’s Lacrosse opens season with 21-9 win over SUNY Brockport

VICTOR, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team opened its 2024 season with a 21-9 win over SUNY Brockport on Saturday at the Pinnacle Athletic Facility in Victor. 
 
Senior midfielder Jordan Leuze got the Cardinals on the board just 20 seconds into the game with the team's first score of the season. The Jamesville native ultimately would finish with six points on the day- his goal plus five assists. A little over two minutes later, junior Ethan Kesselring scored his first of the season to make it 2-0. 
 
Although Brockport cut the lead to 2-1, the Cardinals soon made up for it with goals by senior Timmy Salit and freshman Scott Bovard to up the lead to 4-1. Fisher ultimately ended the first period of play with a 4-2 lead, one they extended to 10-4 by halftime.
 
After the two teams each scored four points in the third quarter to make the game 14-8, the Cardinals blew it open for good in the fourth and final quarter, outscoring Brockport 7-1 in the final 15 minutes for the 12-point victory. 
 
Freshman midfielder Sean Donaldson made the most of his college debut, scoring a team-high four goals on the day. Senior attacker Matthew Kemmis had three goals and three assists to tie Leuze on the day in points. Junior attacker Brady Mason also had three goals. 
 
Rounding out goal-scoring for the Cardinals were Salit (2), Kesselring (2), Brett Seaman (1), Carter Van Holland (1), Braeden McNeill (1), and Griffin Dautrich (1). Sophomore midfielder Matt Slowinski had two assists. Senior Logan Grom pulled up nine groundballs and went 15-of-25 in faceoffs. 
 
In net, senior Ben Hammond started the game and picked up the win, allowing four goals and making nine saves. Sophomore Tyler Manning made a save in his 30 minutes of relief. 
 
Fisher returns to the field on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Ithaca College. Gametime is 3:00 P.M.
